As COVID restrictions began to lift, New Zealand’s favourite low-cost carrier Jetstar wanted to get Kiwis excited about travel again.

After a little digging, we uncovered an emerging travel trend – spontaneity. The uncertainty of COVID meant New Zealanders felt more comfortable booking holidays in the short-term.

So, to celebrate Jetstar’s 13th birthday, we released thousands of extra-low short-term fares enabling Kiwis to ‘fly on the fly.'

We onboarded experts to uncover the new trend

  • 41 percent of New Zealanders were booking flights closer to their travel date than pre-pandemic

  • And, the number of Kiwis booking flights within a month of travel has more than doubled

  • 80% of New Zealanders were more likely to travel domestically

And, 57% said they would drop everything to head off on a trip immediately if they were given free flights. So, we put it to the test.
